Dean of Canterbury, R. Payne Smith authored the Thesaurus Syriacus, a definitive lexicon that had rich citations and rare definitions of idioms. As a result it often functions as an index to much of the Syriac literature published up until the late nineteenth century. Another obituary said that his work will be remembered as a "chief contribution" among "lexicographical enterprises."

Published in the Athenaeum: A Journal of Literature, Science, the Fine Arts, Music, and the Drama. Volume 1.
